Using ComposiMold for your mold making and casting applications

Using ComposiMold
ComposiMold is a flexible, rubber mold making material that can be melted poured and reused. This material is a thermoplastic mold making material that works well for plastic casts, plaster casts, and other mold making applications. The rubber mold is usable with many different casting materials including plaster, cement, epoxy, polyurethane, polymer clay, and others. ComposiMold can be used for rubber molds, mold making and as a resin.

Advantages of ComposiMold include:

  • Lower costs over many mold making materials. The lower cost is especially true as you make more unique molds. Instead of being able to make one mold, you can remelt the ComposiMold and make 10 to 50 molds.

  • Ease of use. ComposiMold is a one part system that does not require a scale or any measurement.

  • Reusability. The ComposiMold can be continuously remelted to make new molds as you learn and experiment.

  • Limitations include:

    • Less strength as compared to silicone or polyurethane molds

    • Large molds may melt due to exothermic reaction of the casting material if using large urethane castings or epoxy castings.

    • Less longevity per mold as compared to silicone or polyurethane molds

The following sections discuss how to use the ComposiMold to make unique rubber molds and castings.

    Melting ComposiMold

Melt the ComposiMold by heating above 130 F to melt using a double boiler or microwave.

Microwave times will vary. Start with short heating times. We have found that for the 6 oz container, 30 to 60 seconds is typically long enough to melt the resin. After microwaving, stir and let the temperatures equilibrate throughout the molding compound.

The 16 oz container should be heated for 3 to 5 minutes. Start by heating in 1 minute intervals. Stir it after every minute or less to make sure all the material is heated evenly.

For the 32 oz container, 7 to 10 minutes is typically needed. The first time you melt ComposiMold, do it in 1 minute intervals: 1 minute of heating followed by 1 minute of stirring to equilibrate the temperature. As you see how your microwave works, you can adjust the times.

    Container Size Microwave times (estimated)
    6 oz 30-60 seconds
16 oz 3 to 5 minutes, stir every 1-2 minutes
    32 oz 7 to 10 minutes, stir every 1 to 2 minutes

Warning: The ComposiMold container WILL melt if overheated. Do not heat the container without the ComposiMold in it. Also, the ComposiMold WILL BE HOT. Be careful.

    Solidifying ComposiMold

ComposiMold solidifies when it cools to a flexible, rubbery, polymer. So to solidify, just let the part cool. To speed up to process, you can put your part in the refrigerator or use ice packs against your part. Do not submerge the ComposiMold in water to cool.

    Filtering the ComposiMold

    To filter:

    • Place a filter into the funnel.
    • Hold the funnel above a container that can withstand the hot ComposiMold.
    • Melt the ComposiMold as previously discussed.
    • Pour the ComposiMold through the filter and into a second container.
